Protect Freedom of the Press: Tell Scott Pruitt Harassing Reporters is Not OK

Target: Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Goal: Stop allowing security guards to block reporters from speaking to EPA spokespersons or from covering environmental affairs.

The head of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, is apparently blocking reporters from major news agencies, including the Associated Press (AP), from covering important environmental affairs, as demonstrated at a recent water pollution summit. When an AP reporter attempted to speak with an EPA public-affairs spokesperson, security guards allegedly shoved her and forcibly removed her from the building. Attempts like this by the EPA to control what information can reach the public must be brought to an end so that the press can carry out its Constitutionally-protected rights.

EPA spokesperson Jahan Wilcox stated that the AP reporter was removed because she threatened to provide “negative coverage” based on the fact that most major news networks, including the Associated Press, CNN and E&E News had been barred from attending the summit. One reporter for Politico claimed that security guards joked about preventing the reporter from filming and covering the event as she was being removed.

There is no excuse for physically threatening members of the press for simply attempting to carry out their jobs with integrity. Sign this petition to hold Scott Pruitt accountable for this attack on the First Amendment and demand that the press be allowed to report on all EPA-related affairs.

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

Your attempts to prevent the public from finding about about important environmental threats that could impact their lives must be brought to an end. By barring reporters from the Associated Press, CNN and other news outlets from environmental summits, and allowing members of the press to be harassed by guards, you are jeopardizing public safety and violating the Constitutionally-sanctioned right of freedom of the press.

Security guards cannot be permitted to threaten, harass or forcibly remove reporters who are merely attempting to do their jobs by covering potentially important events. As administrator of the EPA, you have a responsibility to ensure that the American public is made aware of environmental threats. We demand that you stop infringing on the Press’ First Amendment rights and allow the media to report freely at all EPA events.

  1. Does America not fight in foreign lands to promote democracy and Free Speech? Or should this only apply when one becomes a Yes-Person?

EPA messed up for along time – see hoe people still struggle and suffer in West Virginia!

    • Kris Harker says:

People in West Virginia struggle because they keep electing the Republicans who could care less about them. They really need to get smarter and vote for candidates who will truly help them and not just lip service to get elected.

  2. This is no surprise to me. Trump is so concerned about his delicate ego that he won’t let any journalists into his government affairs. Oh, ya, except for anyone who will say what he wants them to. I’m sure that this rule goes for the rest of his cabinet too. As far as I can see, this administration needs more watching than any other. If you want trust, you need to earn it.
