Urge American Airlines to Take Care When Transporting Animals

Target: Doug Parker, American Airlines Director General

Goal: Take additional care and precautions when transporting animals.

A primate that was being transported on an American Airlines flight escaped his cage and ran loose through the San Antonio International Airport. The animal had arrived on a flight from Chicago when he broke out of his container. The airport believed the primate to be a baboon, but Brown University in Rhode Island later confirmed that the animal was a rhesus macaque that had recently been retired from the university’s research centers.

Russell J. Handy, Aviation Director of the San Antonio International Airport System, said that the incident resulted in some slowed baggage collection but no delays in flights. He went on to say that airport security blocked off the area to prevent any risk. The macaque is now on its way to his new home near San Antonio, an animal sanctuary and refuge. An official statement of the incident said, “American Airlines, the San Antonio Aviation Department and officials from the San Antonio Zoo all worked in conjunction to ensure his safety and wellbeing as he continues his journey to his new home.”

Although the animal was not physically harmed, wild animals should not have to suffer the confusion and anxiety of being loose in an airport. Sign this petition to urge American Airlines to take additional care and precautions when transporting animals.

Dear Director Parker,

In the recent incident of a rhesus macaque escaping his enclosure in the San Antonio International Airport, officials from American Airlines, the airport, and the local zoo worked together to ensure the safe capture and final transportation of the monkey to his new home at a San Antonio animal sanctuary and refuge. I applaud your team’s ability to handle a difficult and unusual situation. However, no animal should be subjected to the stress and confusion of being loose in an airport setting. I urge you to take additional care and precautions when transporting animals to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
