Forbid Cruel Wildlife Killing Contests

Target: John J. Flanagan, New York Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Make senseless, brutal wildlife killing contests illegal in the state of New York.

An undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States has revealed barbaric wildlife killing contests that are currently taking place in New York. These contests offer awards and cash prizes for slaughtering animals, and video from the investigation documented participants throwing the bodies of foxes and coyotes into piles at an award ceremony, joking about luring and killing the animals. Animal advocates and lawmakers in New York have introduced legislation (A.4116a/S.5148a) that, if passed, would make it illegal to “organize, sponsor, conduct, promote or participate in any contest, competition, tournament, or derby with the objective of taking or hunting wildlife for prizes for other inducement, or for entertainment.”

These tournaments, derbies, and drives are often touted as a means of population control, but the video of contest participants calling the slaughter “enjoyable”—as well as the use of brutal methods like predator calling, which lures animals by tricking them into thinking they’ve heard the sound of prey or young in distress—reveals them to simply be blood sport. Predators like bobcats, foxes, and coyotes are often the victims of these massacres, but other species like crows and squirrels have been targeted as well. In all of these cases, the contests contradict the principles of both science-based wildlife management and fair-chase hunting. These slaughters are senseless and unjustifiable, and must be stopped. Sign below to demand that legislation banning these inhumane contests is put into place immediately.

Dear Senator Flanagan,

Investigations by the Humane Society have revealed brutal and barbaric wildlife killing contests and events taking place in New York, and they must be put to an end by passing legislation A.4116a/S.5148a. These contests—often called tournaments, derbies, or drives—are blood sport without scientific or environmental benefit. They also flout notions of sportsmanship and respect for fair play. As Senator Phil Boyle puts it, “Our legislation would put an end to the unsportsmanlike killing of wildlife in these competitions in New York State. The participation in mass killings where the hunted have no fair chance is deeply disturbing, and hunters should be held to higher standards.”

Video from the undercover investigation shows contest participants throwing bodies onto piles, joking about how “enjoyable” these cruel methods of killing are, and receiving awards for their brutality in front of children. As Assemblymember Deborah Glick states, “There is no place for inhumane and cruel wildlife killing contests in a civilized society. These activities are portrayed by some as entertainment, but they engender a heartless disrespect for humans’ relationship with nature and are disruptive to the ecosystem. I thank the Humane Society of the United States for continuing to expose these killing contests as the cruel blood sport that they truly are. We must take meaningful action to end this senseless killing in New York and pass A.4116a/S.5148a immediately.” I urge you to heed her words and ensure that this legislation is enacted as soon as possible.

So many cruel heartless people. I just wish we could do the same to them as they do to these beautiful, innocent, defenceless animals.

    • Iris, you are 1000% right! What they do is legally sanctioned because there is much corruption. Yes if it was legal WE would EXECUTE them all! Bit, by bit, one by one. Each one of us would take on a different target. Those subhumans deserve to be executed!

Population control ?!?!? What a total horses#!t excuse for
people who just like to kill things. Sick, savage people.

I can think of another species that could use some population control. Care to guess?
