FEMA: Don’t Give Up on Puerto Rico Yet

Target: Mike Byrne, FEMA

Goal: Keep FEMA and Army Corps of Engineers resources in Puerto Rico until power is restored to 100% of the island.

Eight months after Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, many residents still do not have power and FEMA has denied requests to extend their contract. FEMA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) resources are being pulled out before completing power restoration to the island as the 2018 hurricane season looms.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) services 1.47 million customers, over 1% of which still do not have power months after the hurricane devastation. That is over 16,000 homes remaining without power. Many of these homes are in the difficult to reach areas of the island, including Yabucoa, where Hurricane Maria initially made landfall.

Representative Jenniffer Gonzalez recently requested an extension of FEMA’s contract in Puerto Rico to support power restoration following Hurricane Maria last year. FEMA denied this request Thursday May 17th, the day before their contract ended, leaving no time to respond before pulling out the 700 USACE workers fixing the power lines.

The literal and figurative powerlessness of some residents have led to desperate protests for help. They have suffered for months and received less help. Sign the petition to implore FEMA to continue aid to Puerto Rico until full power is restored to all residents.

Dear Mr. Byrne,

Thousands of Puerto Ricans are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Maria. Your denial of Representative Gonzalez’s contract extension request will only prolong this suffering, as residents continue living without electricity.

Residents in remote areas of the island are still powerless months after the hurricane’s devastation. Reducing the number of workers available to fix the electrical lines is not the answer, especially to the desperate regions of the island, some of those hit hardest such as Yabucoa. It is unclear that PREPA is able to pick up the slack that FEMA and USACE leave behind in restoring Puerto Rico’s power.

The next hurricane season is upon us and these residents still need your help. Please, continue aid for Puerto Rico until electricity is restored to the entire island.
