Applaud Mexico City for Banning Dolphin and Sea Lion Captivity

Target: José Ramón Amieva, Interim Head of Government, Mexico City

Goal: Applaud decision to ban dolphinariums and other exhibits that feature captive dolphins and sea lions.

Dolphinariums have been banned in Mexico City, which will put an end to an era of dolphin and sea lion captivity in one of the world’s largest cities. For those sea mammals that are currently held in captivity, their owners now have a six month deadline to ensure that they are transferred to accredited wildlife sanctuaries. Mexico City officials deserve our thanks for this compassionate move that will save these intelligent creatures from being cruelly exploited for profit and entertainment.

Dolphins and sea lions alike suffer when they are placed in small tanks and forced to interact with humans and other animals in an unnatural setting. The extreme stress these creatures face in captivity can result in increased aggression, repetitive behaviors, and an increased likelihood of contracting life-threatening infections and other diseases. As a result, many of these animals do not live as long in captivity as they might otherwise in the wild.

Marine mammals belong in the ocean, not in dolphinariums or other exhibits intended to entertain tourists and other guests. Sign the petition below to thank Mexico City and its officials for banning this inhumane practice.

Dear Mr. Amieva,

Dolphinariums and other exhibits featuring dolphins and sea lions have been banned in your city thanks to the efforts of hard-working and compassionate politicians and city officials. We wish to thank you and everyone else responsible for ensuring that these creatures will no longer be cruelly exploited in captivity, and that those found to be in violation of this new ban will face steep fines if their animals are not moved to accredited sanctuaries.

We are grateful for the nearly unanimous support of this new ban, which will send a signal to other cities around the world that the era of marine mammal captivity is at an end. We the undersigned wish to praise this most recent step your city has taken to protect wildlife in captivity and hope that you will continue to support the welfare of all animals that call Mexico City home.
