Trump: Don’t Threaten to Overthrow North Korea

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Pressure the president to recommit to meeting with Kim Jong-un rather than threatening him military intervention.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea continue to escalate. Now that Kim Jong-un has canceled the summit with South Korea over joint military drills with the U.S., he’s threatening to call off the upcoming meeting with Donald Trump as well. Meanwhile, the American president is still agreeing to meet under the condition that Jong-un either forfeit his nuclear weapons or face a fate similar to that of Libya’s late Muammar Gaddafi — governmental overthrow. Repeatedly, Trump’s rhetoric straddles the line between provocation, fear-mongering, and dangerous foreign policy.

Trump’s propensity to threaten foreign powers with American military might should be alarming. There’s no denying that North Korea requires a certain level of diplomatic intervention. But to approach a diplomatic meeting with ultimatums (for Jong-un to either eliminate his nuclear weapons to remain in power or inevitably be assassinated) seems to be appallingly belligerent. Sign the petition below to convince Trump to forfeit his combativeness while also urging the president to engage civilly with Kim Jong-un. The answer to Korea’s unification lays in diplomacy, not war.

Dear President Trump,

By now you should realize that “unilateral nuclear abandonment” won’t be a feasible option for peace negotiations with Kim Jong-un. For once in your presidency, be willing to compromise and resist the temptation to hastily react. No country with nuclear capabilities will simply let go of their nuclear technology on your command, as seen in Iran. Denuclearization programs require time, effort, and most of all, effective diplomacy. Failure to engage in meaningful communication will only stall resolutions and lead to more geopolitical conflict.

Remember that time is of the essence, considering that the historic summit between you and Jong-un was set for June 12 in Singapore. Just because Jong-un canceled an upcoming meeting with President Jae-in of South Korea doesn’t mean you have to resort to the “Libya Model” to decimate North Korea of its despotic leader. Military intervention will only result in more instability throughout the world. The fact that Jong-un and Jae-in have been engaging in dialogue about the divided peninsula is a sign of hope, not imminent danger.
