Protect Animals from Ingesting Lethal Garbage from Dump

Target: His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka

Goal: Demand Sri Lanka landfill build a fence after six elephants died of plastic ingestion.

Six elephants are dead after ingesting polythene and plastic-laced food at a Sri Lanka landfill. These elephants are sadly not the only animals who have died eating from this landfill, either. Birds, dogs, and others are attracted by the smells of rotten food; daily consumption of this food has led to deaths from polythene poisoning. Those who are lucky enough to survive incur serious health issues, and possibly a shortened life span.

All of these deaths were completely needless and could have been prevented. This landfill should not be accessible to animals at all; not only do animals deserve better than a diet of rotten food tainted with bits of plastic, but the death of these six elephants is a severe blow to the species’ survival. Elephants are in enough danger as it is, and none of these other animals needed to die either.

Action must be taken immediately to prevent any future deaths. This landfill needs to be fenced in and animals barred from entering and ingesting more toxic polythene-laced food. Sign this petition to demand a fence be built around the landfill as soon as possible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Sirisena,

Six elephants died after ingesting rotten food from a Deegawapi landfill. The food had been tainted with little bits of plastic and polythene, great quantities of which were found in the animals’ systems upon autopsy. Other animals have died this way as well, and others have incurred serious health issues.

This is unacceptable. This landfill should not be accessible to any animals, especially elephants, whose numbers are dangerously low and who must be protected from any causes of death if they are to rebuild their species. Additionally, polythene and plastic poisoning are already a much too common cause of death among other species across the globe, and every step possible must be taken to prevent it. You must have a fence built around this landfill to keep animals out, for their own protection. It is too late for these elephants, but future deaths can be prevented with action.

Sincerely,
