Stop Inhumane Government Experimentation on Innocent Animals

Target: Sonny Perdue, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Goal: End all government-funded animal research projects that jeopardize the welfare of innocent animals, including cats and kittens.

Hundreds of kittens were allegedly used as “test tubes” for researching the effects of a deadly disease for decades as part of a USDA-funded research project. Using money from tax-paying citizens, researchers reportedly bred cats simply for the purpose of destroying them through a series of lethal experiments. This revelation has resulted in public outrage, and now lawmakers are questioning the ethics of using taxpayer funds to sustain such inhumane testing.

Reported details about the research were revealed by White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights advocacy group. They allege that cats and kittens were fed meat samples laced with the Toxoplasma parasite and that they were later killed and disposed of by incineration. The USDA claims that the cats were “essential to the success of this critical research,” but reportedly made no efforts to place the cats in approved rescue facilities or adoptive homes once experimentation was complete.

While the goal of reducing the spread of potentially dangerous food-borne diseases like toxoplasmosis is worthwhile, it is equally important that animals not be subjected to cruelty as part of research. Please sign the petition below to demand that the government agency charged with enforcing animal welfare regulations stop treating animals in its care with such reckless disregard.

Dear Secretary Perdue,

Over several decades, numerous secretive experiments on living cats and kittens were allegedly carried out by the USDA. The research, intended to combat the dangerous Toxoplasma parasite, is said to have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent animals that were disposed of by incineration. If these allegations are true, then taxpayer money was used to fund unethical and inhumane research that most American citizens would likely oppose.

As Rep. Mike Bishop said in his letter to your agency regarding the experimentation, “Any government research project like this one… needs to be put under the microscope.” No animal deserves to be bred to be purposefully infected and then thoughtlessly destroyed. That is why we, the undersigned, demand that you stop all research that involves inflicting pain or suffering on animals and seek ways to adopt out or otherwise rehabilitate animals that have been used in experimentation.
