Trump: Do Not Roll Back Child Labor Laws

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Stop the Trump administration from rolling back child labor laws.

The Trump administration has announced their intentions to do away with child labor protections called the Hazardous Occupations Orders. These rules were set in place decades ago to prevent teenagers from working jobs that would require dangerous tools in addition to being in risky positions, such as roofing or working the meat slicer at a deli. The administration wishes to roll back this order and replace it with a law insisting that the supervisors at these professions watch their workers closely.

This is an unacceptable substitution. Child labor and protection laws exist for a reason; over a century ago, children and teenagers were forced to work in dangerous factories, suffering severe injuries from the machines and even dying as a result. The Hazardous Occupations Orders were put in place to prevent these horrifying incidents, and they cannot simply be replaced by ordering supervisors to “watch teens closely.” Worse, if these teenagers are hurt, parents could easily sue the workplace, which would cost both sides thousands of dollars.

Millions of teenagers will be put at risk by this change, and we cannot allow it to pass. Sign this petition to protect the Hazardous Occupations Orders and protect minors from potential injury or death by dangerous equipment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

Your administration’s intent to roll back the Hazardous Occupations Orders and replace them with a law requiring supervisors to watch teenagers closely at dangerous machines is unacceptable. Child labor laws have existed for decades to right the wrongs done in the past, in which children and teenagers were forced to work in dangerous factories and risk injury or death for it. Your plan would effectively set the country back over a century.

Regardless of how capable and mature some teenagers are, it is still dangerous for minors to operate machinery such as chain saws and meat slicers; they are more likely to incur serious injuries with or without training, and such incidents could lead to lawsuits costing both the teenagers’ parents and the workplace thousands of dollars. Do not touch the Hazardous Occupations Orders. You must not allow teenagers to be hurt using dangerous equipment.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
