Investigate Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Author Junot Diaz

Target: Zinzi Clemmons, Author

Goal: Pursue investigation of Junot Diaz’s alleged pattern of sexual misconduct.

Junot Diaz, prominent Dominican-American writer and 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner, has been accused of sexual misconduct and misogynistic tendencies. During a discussion at a writers festival, Zinzi Clemmons described an incident where Diaz had allegedly forcefully kissed her. Clemmons turned to Twitter to further state that the alleged incident happened when she was an “unknown wide-eyed” 26-year-old. She was a graduate student and had invited Diaz to speak at her school. She claims that he “used it as an opportunity to corner [her] and forcibly kiss [her].”

Clemmons’ claim was met with a long list of women who reportedly had similarly inappropriate or uncomfortable interactions with Diaz. Carmen Maria Machado, a short story author, described an incident during which she questioned an aspect of Diaz’s writing, particularly “his protagonist’s unhealthy, pathological relationship with women.” Diaz reportedly appeared to become enraged by this question, and Machado described his alleged “blast of misogynist rage and public humiliation” that lasted twenty minutes in a Twitter response to Clemmons’ initial tweet. Writer Monica Byrne also described an encounter with Diaz that she believed was “completely bizarre, disproportionate, and violent.”

These accusations come in the wake of a personal essay that Diaz published in The New Yorker that describes his own childhood sexual abuse and how it has affected his relationships with women. Demand that these allegations against Diaz be thoroughly investigated.

Dear Ms. Clemmons,

The conversation that is happening on a national scale about the prevalence of sexual misconduct and misogyny is one that needs to be led by the victims. While speaking out and publicizing the incident of sexual misconduct you reportedly experienced during Junot Diaz’s visit to your graduate school, I urge you to continue to pursue investigation of Diaz’s alleged pattern of sexual misconduct, especially now, as this reportedly was not an isolated incident.

He’s such a good author and I hate to think this is true, but if so then he needs to be investigated and punished.
