Drop Charges Against Activists Involved in Turkey Rescue

Target: Norbest CEO Robert Wangerien

Goal: Drop charges against six animal rights activists who exposed allegedly horrific living conditions on a turkey farm.

Six animal rights activists each face up to ten years in prison for allegedly stealing three turkeys from a Utah animal plant. Based out of California, the Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) team was investigating a facility belonging to Utah’s largest turkey producer, Norbest, in January, 2017. While the company advertises itself as organic with turkeys ¨from pristine high mountains,¨ the activists reported shocking living conditions with disease-ridden birds on the brink of death. According to their allegations Norbest even added penicillin to the water supply to treat a hepatitis outbreak, which the company denies. Many of the turkeys also reportedly had open wounds due to overcrowding and pecking.

Although Norbest acknowledged the turkeys’ unacceptable physical conditions, once again so-called ¨organic farms” have gotten away with misleading the public. Much of this revolves around Utah’s former ¨ag-gag¨ laws that once permitted industrial farms to press charges against suspected trespassers for secretly filming the premises. Historically, this was used as a means to prevent journalists and activists from sabotaging America’s industrial meat industry. Despite Utah removing this legal protection, activists are still being punished for exposing the truth. Demand the CEO of Norbest forgive the defendants.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Wangerien,

Animal rights activists are distressed by your recent ruling against six individuals accused of stealing three turkeys from a farm in Moroni, Utah. Try to understand that the Direct Action Everywhere group strives to rehabilitate animals through ¨open rescue¨ missions. Once animals are saved from commercial facilities, they receive veterinary service before being transferred to an animal sanctuary. What they exposed on that farm should be celebrated rather than disciplined, especially since they say your enterprise put penicillin in the water to treat the turkeys for hepatitis. Consumers deserve to know what their ¨organic¨ meat actually contains. Hiding that knowledge from the public violates our First Amendment rights.

Ultimately, these activists don’t deserve to be prosecuted since they didn’t take anything of true commercial value. What they did was heroic considering that the turkeys allegedly had festering open wounds and were on the verge of dying. Instead of allowing the turkeys to die miserably, they nursed them back to health. In the end they even convinced your company to recommit itself to improving living conditions for livestock. To press charges against them nonetheless undermines their freedom of speech and commitment to ending animal cruelty. Please rescind your indictment and grant these people justice.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. Obviously Norbest has problems other than activists or no one would’ve shown up to expose the issues. Norbest needs to understand that people are getting fed up with lip service concerning animal welfare and that we want animals involved in our food chain to be respected and properly cared for prior to being sacrificed for somebody’s dinner – is that too much to ask? Forgive these people and work on cleaning up your own act, it needs work.

  2. Cynthia Mattera says:

Stop punishing people who are trying to help abused animals. Instead, punish the abusers!!!!

  3. This is extreme insanity. We the public must stand up with these activists. They could go to jail for 10 years this is unbelievable and charges must be dropped.IF NOT WE MUST SEND THIS TO ALL OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND BOYCOTT NORBEST. I HIGHLY SUGGEST NORBEST TAKES THIS TIME TO IMPROVE THEIR CARE OF ANIMALS AND DROP THE CHARGES AGAINST THESE ACTIVISTS WHO WERE ONLY TRYING TO HELP ANIMALS. NORBEST IS ONLY HAVING BAD PUBLICITY COME OUT OF THIS FOR THEM.

    DROP THE CHARGES NOW!!
