Denounce Republican Campaign Ad Featuring Teenager Threatened by Gun

Target: Brian Kemp, Georgia Secretary of State

Goal: Stop the running of a political ad that condones the unsafe use of firearms.

Brian Kemp, a Georgia-based Republican gubernatorial candidate who is also currently serving as Georgia’s Secretary of State, has been running a campaign ad in which he threatens a teenager at gunpoint to recite his own campaign promises. The ad presents Kemp as an overprotective father interviewing one of his teenage daughter’s suitors, making light of his willingness to murder a child in order to play up his unabashed love for the Second Amendment.

The ad is especially troublesome because it was shot in a room full of guns, including two AR-15 rifles leaning against a wall in the background. Taking into account how volatile the subject of proper gun regulation in the United States has been as of late, Kemp’s ad comes off as incredibly tone deaf. When Kemp was rightly criticized for the nature of the ad, he responded on Twitter by chastising his critics, saying that their real motive was to attack his Second Amendment rights. Sign this petition to urge Mr. Kemp to discontinue his offensive and tone-deaf campaign ad.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Kemp,

You are clearly a strong believer in the Second Amendment rights granted to all U.S. citizens, but your recent campaign ad in which you threaten a teenager with a shotgun was a step too far. I understand you were trying to play the ‘overprotective father’ angle for laughs, but given the current political climate regarding gun safety, now is not the time to be joking about proper firearm use.

Owning firearms is well within your rights, but you shouldn’t be flaunting those rights to promote your political values, especially when your message seems to be that you’d happily shoot a teenager if he didn’t share those values. I urge you to cease running the ad in question and to find alternate methods for presenting your conservative platform to the general public.

Sincerely,

Another moron running for office. The first rule of gun safety is never point a gun at anyone you do not intend to shoot even if it’s unloaded. Guess he skipped that rule.

no more gun ads. enough with the guns already. ban guns for good.
