Demand Asylum for Honduran Migrant Caravan Refugees

Target: Kirstjen M. Nielsen, Secretary of Homeland Security

Goal: Grant timely asylum to Honduran refugees who are fleeing Central American violence.

For the past few months, a large caravan of Honduran immigrants has been traveling through both Central America and Mexico, their goal being to reach the United States border and seek asylum from rampant Central American violence. However, upon reaching the U.S. port of entry at San Ysidro, the migrant group was denied entry, with Customs and Border Protection officers claiming that their San Ysidro processing facility was already at maximum capacity. This claim directly contradicted a statement made by Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen, who said in an April 25 press release that her department was taking steps to ensure that any and all asylum claims filed by the migrant refugees would be adjudicated promptly.

The refugee caravan consists of some 200 individuals, many of whom are children. If the San Ysidro processing facility is indeed at capacity, the Department of Homeland Security should do whatever it can to ensure more space is made so that the Honduran caravan isn’t left stranded on the Mexican side of the U.S. border. Sign this petition to urge Secretary Nielsen to uphold the statement she made about granting asylum to these innocent refugees.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Nielsen,

The Honduran migrant caravan that recently arrived at the U.S. border facility in San Ysidro has come a long way in its journey to escape Central American violence. Those same immigrants are now being denied asylum because the San Ysidro facility is supposedly at capacity, a direct contradiction of the promise you made in your April 25 press release that steps were being taken to ensure their asylum claims would be adjudicated quickly.

Please do whatever you can to ensure the long journey these innocent refugees made wasn’t in vain. America should be a country that provides hope and safety to those who are fleeing persecution, but for now all these immigrants see is a country that went back on its promise to provide timely aid.

Sincerely,
