Demand Expulsion for Frat Members in Reported Racist Hazing Ritual

Target: Kent Syverud, Chancellor of Syracuse University

Goal: Ensure that students reportedly involved in a racist fraternity video scandal are properly punished by the university.

Members of the Theta Tau engineering fraternity at Syracuse University are in hot water after a reportedly racist video surfaced on the Internet. Known as “Pledge Porno,” the clip reportedly showed an initiation ceremony with members spewing off racist and anti-Semitic comments to new recruits. One pledge even vowed to “always have hate in [their] heart” for blacks after saying “f*** black people.” So far, Theta Tau has been permanently expelled, and disciplinary action is reportedly underway.

The problem is that the alleged participants don’t seem remorseful. According to some, the video was “satirical” because they were intentionally acting like uneducated “red necks.” Whether the students are suspended, expelled, or forced to undergo diversity training, there must be legal repercussions for such behavior on multiple levels. To set a new standard against hate speech on college campuses, urge the chancellor of Syracuse University to appropriately penalize those reportedly involved.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chancellor Syverud,

Your university has been in the spotlight ever since the Daily Orange leaked a controversial video of Theta Tau fraternity brothers reportedly participating in a racially fueled initiation ceremony. Considering that some of the participants have defended their actions by calling the video satirical, the termination of the fraternity won’t be sufficient in addressing this scandal or their reasoning fallacies. They need to learn that racism on college campuses won’t be tolerated or go unpunished.

Syracuse University is a prestigious school with potential to pave a new foundation for tackling discrimination and hate speech on college campuses. If the students get away with light disciplinary action, it will send the wrong message to other fraternities around the country that racist behaviors won’t warrant serious consequences. Make the right decision, whether it be suspending or expelling the students, followed by some mandatory education on human dignity. A simple slap on the wrist won’t fix anything.

Sincerely,
