Support Maryland’s Stance Against Puppy Mills

Target: Larry Hogan, Governor of Maryland

Goal: Applaud Maryland’s latest animal welfare victories, including banning pet stores from selling commercially bred puppies and kittens, and encourage other states to emulate this example.

In an important step for compassion and animal welfare, Maryland has become the second state to pass legislation banning the sale of puppies and kittens in retail pet stores. This marks a huge victory in the fight against puppy mills, and the protection of innocent pets against mistreatment. Under this new law, pet shops will only be allowed to adopt cats and dogs from local shelters, simultaneously combating cruel commercial breeding and helping ensure that animals in need find loving homes.

In addition, this ban is not the only legislation on animal welfare that Maryland’s governor Larry Hogan signed into law. At the same time that Governor Hogan instituted the ban on selling kittens and puppies in retail pet stores, he also took steps to protect pets from landing in abusive homes. One of the other bills that will become law prohibits convicted animal abusers from owning another pet. These laws are important wins against animal cruelty. Sign below to support these actions, and to encourage the rest of the country to follow suit.

Dear Governor Hogan,

Thank you for taking a stand against animal cruelty and signing important animal welfare bills into law. Pets deserve to be protected from mistreatment, brutality, abuse, and neglect. Maryland’s legislation preventing cats and dogs that were not adopted from a shelter from being sold at retail pet stores, as well as protecting pets from being owned by a person convicted of crimes against animals, are important victories for humanity and compassion.

These laws are also vital steps toward combatting the cruelty of puppy mills. This is a nationwide fight, and Maryland’s new laws set a positive example that other states should follow. Thank you for leading the country in taking these critical steps. I support Maryland’s animal welfare legislation and urge you to continue the fight against animal cruelty.

This is a good start but there is still so much more left to do, all animals deserve compassion and here’s why (not for faint of the heart):

  3. lynn woods says:

it’s a start good for Maryland now if we could go after the asian countries and empty their countries of the dogs and cats that are slaughtered over there and find them all loving homes we could really celebrate

  4. Barton Dixon says:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi

The aforementioned reality applies to the states of our nation too.

Thank you to all those in the State of Maryland who work for compassion and thoughtfulness to other life in all its forms.
