Do Not Place More Financial Burden on Impoverished Americans

Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives

Goal: Stop the agency that is supposed to ensure affordable housing for low-income Americans from tripling their rent.

While Congress signed off on a tax law that dramatically benefits powerful corporations and wealthy individuals, it will now consider a proposal that brutally punishes the poorest, most disadvantaged citizens. Housing Secretary Ben Carson recently announced this latest controversial move: new guidelines that would triple the rent individuals living in low-income public housing must pay.

Just as corporations ironically had their tax rate recently slashed from around 35 percent, the new proposal would rocket the percentage low-income families must pay toward their housing to 35 percent. Therefore, the current limit of 50 dollars of total income for minimum-wage workers per month would skyrocket to 150 dollars per month. Worse yet, Carson’s proposal would strip poor families of the ability to relieve these crushing burdens if they are caring for young children or suffer from major health problems.

Secretary Carson has largely kept his job, despite scandals, because he will push through the current administration’s damaging policies. Congress must not approve this latest destructive action, however. Sign this petition and demand our lawmakers stand firm against callous policies that target our most vulnerable citizens.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Ryan,

Consider the optics of laying a large financial burden on your most impoverished constituents when you just recently gave a massive windfall to your most privileged constituents. When Secretary Carson’s low-income housing proposal comes before the House, think about those families who will have their rent nearly tripled. Think about the money that could have gone to food, healthcare, childcare, education, and other basic sustenance instead being funneled to a government that has broken its promise and defied its most fundamental values.

These individuals and families need a helping hand, not a looming fist, as they work towards the “self-sufficiency” you so cherish. They need leaders and ambassadors who will treat them not as the invisible or the forgotten, but as the hope for a better future that has always empowered this country. I urge you not to pass this dangerous measure.

Sincerely,
