Ben Carson: Don’t Raise Rent Prices for Low-Income Families

Target: Ben Carson, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

Goal: Speak out against proposal to raise minimum rent contributions for low-income families.

During a time when many low-income families and individuals already struggle to pay their monthly rent, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson’s proposed solution to the ongoing housing crisis is to raise those rent amounts even more.

Currently, tenants who are renting property usually pay about 30 percent of their adjusted income, with a hard cap of $50 per month in place for extremely poor families. According to a recent report from The Washington Post, new legislation that Mr. Carson has proposed to Congress would raise the monthly contributions to 35 percent and would increase the low-income cap to $150, triple what it is now. Since many of the 4.5 million families who depend on federal housing assistance already struggle to pay rent, Mr. Carson’s proposed legislation would effectively drive millions of Americans out of their homes if it was signed into law. Add your name to the below petition to urge Secretary Carson to reconsider his proposed housing legislation.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Secretary Carson,

You claim to have America’s best interests at heart, but when I look at your proposed solution for the ongoing housing crisis, all I see is a piece of legislation that is very un-American. How can low-income families be expected to work their way out of poverty when your department’s plan to ‘help’ them involves tripling their monthly rent contributions? Low-income families are already struggling to make ends meet, and your legislation will do much more to hinder them than help.

If you truly care about the plight of the average American, please consider withdrawing or at least amending your proposed housing legislation. There are many Americans who want to work hard and make a better life for themselves, but they can’t do so if the very politicians and government systems they rely on are actively working against them.

Sincerely,
