Goal: Congratulate Maryland on passing a bill that allows for access to sexual health services in prisons.
Inmates in Maryland will now have access to reproductive health services. Maryland passed a landmark piece of bi-partisan legislation that secures access to healthcare for the state’s incarcerated women. The law passed by Maryland lawmakers allows for support for pregnant women and detainees who need treatment, along with providing menstrual products to those who need them. Maryland is the first state to pass a law of this kind and set a precedent for positive steps in the right direction regarding prison reform.
Prison inmates are humans and deserve basic human rights, no matter their crimes. Allowing incarcerated women access to essential healthcare is sure to make a dent in all the known health issues for women in prison. We need more positive changes like this, and we need them now!
