Oppose Discriminatory Travel Ban that Targets Religious Minorities

Target: Anthony Kennedy, Justice of the United States Supreme Court

Goal: Protect Muslims and Middle Eastern citizens from unfair travel restrictions.

“Donald J. Trump calls for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States….”

The president’s proposed travel ban faces the Supreme Court today, and it will likely be these words — infamously blasted during one of Trump’s campaign rallies — that most echo in the court’s chambers. President Trump claims his executive order, now on its third iteration, is intended for national security. The president’s own rhetoric, however, makes this assertion questionable at best and an outright lie at worst.

When President Trump unexpectedly placed travel restrictions on visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries early in his term, chaos and confusion ensued, with many individuals who had already arrived in the country being detained at airports. Almost immediately, opponents challenged the action on the grounds that Congress must approve all immigration decisions and that the president’s language indicated discrimination based on nationality and religion. A conversation that President Trump allegedly had with close advisers in which he purportedly brainstormed how to create a “legal” Muslim ban seems to support the charge of discrimination.

This order, even in its current version, still primarily targets countries with a large Muslim population and leaves off the list many countries whose citizens have committed terrorist attacks in the United States. Perhaps not coincidentally, the U.S., and Trump himself, have strong financial ties to these countries.

Terrorism, as many of the recent mass shootings have proven, is not the exclusive domain of any one group of people. Sign this petition and demand our government start representing the core American value of freedom rather than archaic discriminatory practices that attack our most fundamental principles.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Justice Kennedy,

The U.S. Court of Appeals made a unanimous finding that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority and did not prove his case for banning travelers from several Muslim-majority countries. Rulings of previous versions of this ban have reflected the findings of the court. Please consider the judgment of these professionals and colleagues when evaluating the constitutionality of the travel ban.

More importantly, evaluate the absolute necessity of maintaining a balance of powers. Please do not set a dangerous precedent where in the future one individual, for political gain or otherwise, might be granted the authority to oppress and undermine the bedrock principles of our Constitution and our country.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
