Don’t Hide the Damaging Environmental Impacts of Wood Burning from the American Public

Target: Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Don’t hide the environmental ramifications of burning wood for energy from the public.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that it now considers the burning of wood for energy to be carbon neutral. This means that, from the EPA’s point of view, burning wood is as environmentally safe as utilizing solar or wind power, when in reality it can be quite harmful since burning any sort of biomass releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The science that the EPA is using to try and justify its recent ruling does technically prove that burning wood can be a carbon neutral venture, but only when you look at the effects over a 100-year time period. When you shrink that time frame down to the next five, ten, or even twenty years, the lasting effects are much more damaging. Trees that are cut down for fuel can grow back, but if we burn so much wood in the short term that it causes irreparable harm to the environment, there’s no point in thinking about the long-term benefits. Tell EPA administrator Scott Pruitt to reconsider his position on the carbon neutrality of burning wood by signing this petition.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mr. Pruitt,

I understand your desire to assuage the worries of the American people by declaring that burning wood is carbon neutral, but if you’ll pardon the expression, you’re missing the forest for the trees. In reality, burning any sort of biomass, including wood, can have severe repercussions on the environmental stability of our planet, potentially ruining it for future generations.

Instead of trying to push the burning of wood as a carbon neutral energy source, consider focusing on sustainable energy alternatives like wind and solar power. You are in a better position than most to ensure the planet’s environmental safety, so please Mr. Pruitt, keep it safe.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
