Target: Andrea D’Emic, Principal of St. Patrick School
Goal: Thank St. Patrick School, and other Catholic schools, for taking in students displaced by Hurricane Sandy
When Hurricane Sandy swept through Queens, New York, hundreds of public school students were left without a school to attend. Many public schools in Queens were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, making it necessary to temporarily send attending students to undamaged public schools. However, for some families, the temporary schools were very far away, making it difficult for them to pick up and drop off their children. In an act of kindness, six Catholic schools, including St. Patrick, opened their doors to displaced students, and allowed the children to attend their school free from tuition. Thank St. Patrick and the other schools for taking in displaced students.
St. Patrick School’s usual student body consists of fewer than 300 students. In light of the destruction caused by the hurricane, St. Patrick found room for 50 additional students. These students have spent the last two months attending classes while their public school is being renovated. None of the 50 families was asked to pay tuition, and St. Patrick even donated uniforms to families who needed the assistance. None of the six private schools will be reimbursed by the city’s Education Department for instructing the public school students.
Many of the students and their families have expressed their extreme gratitude for St. Patrick’s generosity. A good number of families have decided to permanently enroll their children in St. Patrick, even after their public school is reopened. Sign the petition below, and thank St. Patrick School for their incredible generosity, and for helping out families who have recently lost everything.
Dear Ms. D’Emic,
Hurricane Sandy recently displaced hundreds of public school students. These students were left without a school to attend. When they were redistributed into public schools, many were very far away. Families worried about sending their children so far from home.
St. Patrick School and five other Catholic schools generously opened their doors to these children. Your school accepted 50 new students, a significant increase in your small student body. Thank you for the amazing generosity of your faculty, staff and students. You gave these students normalcy in the wake of incredible turbulence.
