Applaud Efforts to Cleanup Long Island Sound

Target: Save the Sound, Connecticut Fund for the Environment

Goal: Commend beach cleanup efforts that removed 16,310 pounds of trash from 57 miles of Connecticut shoreline.

Since the first settlers arrived on America’s shores, Long Island Sound has served as one of the most important and productive waterways in the United States. Over 4 million people currently reside along its shores, and its massive watershed—extending as far as the Quebec border at the head of the Connecticut River—is home to nearly 9 million people. As a major hub of fishing, transport, and tourism, Long Island Sound contributes more than $9.5 billion to the regional economy each year. Unfortunately, due to these high levels of activity, the Sound has also attracted a much more unwelcome presence: widespread pollution.

Since 1972, the Save the Sound program has worked to protect Long Island Sound for the millions of people and over 1,400 species of wildlife that call its waters home. This year, Save the Sound fought back against the rising tide of pollution with its annual Coastal Cleanup initiative. Their 2012 effort brought together 2,450 volunteers and removed 16,310 pounds of debris from Connecticut’s waterfront, as well as contributing to the cleanup efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Thanks to the tireless dedication of these volunteers and organizers, nearly 60 miles of Connecticut’s beaches and river fronts have been cleaned of harmful waste that would otherwise pose huge risks to both beachgoers and wildlife alike.

In the face of increasingly urgent environmental concerns, the volunteer and grassroots efforts that work to preserve our cherished natural spaces deserve our most enthusiastic support. Sign this petition to thank Save the Sound for its ongoing fight against pollution in one of America’s most important waters.

Grassroots campaigns such as Save the Sound are vital to achieving the goals of conservation in the face of daunting environmental threats. Your efforts in the Coastal Cleanup initiative this year embodied the very best in volunteerism and stand as a model for what can be achieved by everyday people taking action.

For your 2012 Coastal Cleanup initiative and your ongoing efforts to preserve one of America’s most important waterways, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Save the Sound.
