Stop Putting Sex Workers in Danger

Target: Senator Rob Portman, Sponsor of SESTA

Goal: Overturn harmful legislation that hurts sex workers

A bill recently passed in Congress that was sold as an “anti-sex trafficking” law has in turn endangered the lives of the entire sex worker industry. Since the bill was passed, many platforms that sex workers use to securely organize their work have been shut down. Sites like Backpage, Seeking Arrangements, the Craigslist Love section, and several other popular websites have been shut down; these locations were the only way sex workers could safely and securely get work.

Since being passed, SESTA has directly led to the death of several sex workers along with dozens of disappearances across the country, and these numbers are the early reports before the official count. Sex workers have spoken out across the country in protest of the dire conditions they are now being placed in. Many sex workers are being forced back out onto the streets and in the situations that got them trafficked in the first place. If you care about the lives of this endangered industry, stand with us in signing the petition below to demand this law be overturned.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Portman,

SESTA is a bill that directly endangers the lives of the very people it claims to be protecting. By sending sex workers back to the streets, you are signing their death certificates. The law has good intentions of stopping sex trafficking, but the lives of sex workers should not be the price we pay.

Sex workers are one of the most marginalized, criminalized, and penalized groups across the world, despite being the world’s oldest workforce. We need to take every measure possible to protect sex workers. Stand with the strongest industry in America and demand the bill be overturned.

Sincerely,
