Stop Silencing Online Bloggers and Media Outlets in a Blatant Abuse of Human Rights

Target: John Magufuli, President of Tanzania

Goal: Revoke legislation that severely limits freedom of speech, expression, and press.

Online bloggers, radio hosts, and television personalities are being unfairly silenced by the Government of Tanzania. President John Magufuli has passed legislation that censors online, radio, and television services and allows the increasingly authoritarian government to control the media its citizens consume.

Under the Electronic and Postal Communication Regulations, media services are required to pay over $900 yearly for a license. No information, social media, or news can be posted online until this is done. The government can also revoke a permit if they’re unhappy with the news published.

Government should not have such unlimited control over the media. Sign the petition to demand Tanzania’s president revoke the government’s previous regulations and allow the media to work freely.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Magufuli,

You recently led efforts to virtually silence your nation’s media. Under the Electronic and Postal Communication Regulations, online, television, and radio outlets must pay exorbitant amounts before sharing the news. Even then, your government reserves the right to revoke their license and stop them from disseminating news.

This is a blatant disregard for the rights of speech, expression, and press. You’re denying your citizens access to news and information, controlling the information they’re privy to. I demand your government revoke these new regulations and allow the press to operate both safely and fairly.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
