New Jersey: Require Licenses and Training for Pet Groomers

Target: Stephen M. Sweeney, President of the New Jersey Senate

Goal: Prevent needless tragedies by requiring proper licensing and training for pet groomers.

New Jersey may reintroduce “Bijou’s Law,” a bill that would require official licenses for pet groomers in the wake of three recent dog deaths. Introduced in 2014 and named for a Shih Tzu who died during a routine grooming, the bill was stalled for four years but is now being reconsidered following the death of an eight-year-old bulldog at a PetSmart facility.

“It is sadly far too common for us to read of dog grooming deaths in the news,” says State Senator Kip Bateman of the recent tragedies. Through negligence, cruelty, or sheer accident, these dogs suffered fatal injuries during what should have been a routine procedure; according to the owners, PetSmart did not even explain how or why the dogs died. One cannot even begin to comprehend what mistakes were made for grooming to have become so deadly.

We must support this bill and ensure it passes. No owner should have to receive such devastating news from a business that they entrusted with the care of their beloved pet. Routine procedures should never end in tragedy, and if this bill becomes law, it is hoped that they never will again. Sign this petition to demand groomers be legally required to possess a legitimate license and undergo strict training.

Dear Senator Sweeney,

A bill requiring pet groomers to be officially licensed and trained has been reintroduced after four years of dormancy, in the wake of three recent dog deaths at PetSmart’s grooming facilities. While PetSmart is the company that has made the news, dogs have died unexpectedly from injuries at various other facilities, leaving their owners shocked and devastated. The bill was introduced in 2014, but has remained untouched until now.

You must do all you can to pass this bill. No owner should have to hear that their beloved pet has died during something as routine and innocent as grooming. While this law would not bring back the deceased pets, it would prevent future deaths by ensuring that all groomers are legitimate and know the proper way to handle animals. This law must pass, for the sake of pets all over New Jersey.
