Stop Syrian Government from Harassing Medical Aid Convoys

Target: Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria

Goal: Do not politicize humanitarian aid; allow convoys to assist all areas in need with all necessary supplies.

Suspected chemical attacks and shellings in Syria have left millions of people trapped and in need of life-saving aid, and yet convoys are being held up and stripped of 3,810 different kinds of medical treatments by Syria’s government, according to the U.N. Security Council. It is part of a political strategy to control the assistance that gets through to conflict zones. Middle East researcher Nathanael Chouraqui says, “They [Syria’s government] want to control what, so to speak, the enemy gets.”

People in rebel-controlled areas can be stranded for weeks or even months without aid, while humanitarian groups are forced to jump through bureaucratic hoops before their trucks are allowed to depart. When the trucks finally get on their way, they are systematically stripped of essential medical supplies, both before they leave and at checkpoints along the way. These items include food, clothing, syringes, anesthetics, IV catheters, and sterile surgical gloves. While aid shipments are reaching areas controlled by the Syrian government, medics in besieged areas are forced to treat adults using tools designed for children and even reuse items that are meant to be disposed of after use. Sign below to demand that this cruel politicization of human suffering be stopped, and humanitarian aid be allowed to reach everyone in Syria who needs it.

Dear President Bashar al-Assad,

The inhumane deprivation of humanitarian aid to people in rebel-held areas of Syria must be stopped. Millions of innocent people are trapped and suffering following possible chemical attacks and shellings. To prevent convoys containing all of the necessary materials for civilians’ survival from reaching them in a timely manner is an unacceptable and a cruel violation of human rights.

According to Linda Tom of the U.N., vital supplies like food, clothing, sterile gloves, syringes and anesthetics are removed from convoys, often without justification. Weeks and even months may pass before the trucks can even depart for their destinations because of an unnecessarily difficult bureaucratic process, while innocent people are left in need. Medics in those areas are left without options. Even evacuating patients to places with the necessary supplies is impractical because travel has been made so difficult. They are forced to reuse disposable supplies or use items made for children on adults. As Tom says, aid deliveries are supposed to help anyone who needs assistance, not be used as a political ploy. I urge you to stop taking advantage of human suffering and the pain of Syrian civilians. Allow quick and fully equipped humanitarian aid to reach all of Syria.
