Dog Who Died from Rare Condition Due to Alleged Neglect Deserves Justice

Target: Jack Campbell, State Attorney for Leon County, Florida

Goal: Demand that the man who allegedly starved and neglected his dog, leading to the dog’s death from a rare condition, receive the maximum penalty by law.

A dog suffered and died painfully when she was allegedly starved and denied veterinary care. The suspect reportedly told police that the dog was “old as hell” and that she had been pregnant, but he didn’t know what happened to the puppies. Demand justice for this poor dog.

Tallahassee police responded to Virgil Riley’s residence after they received reports of a thin dog without any bedding. At the home, police stated, they found an emaciated female bulldog who was running a high temperature. Though the dog received prompt medical care at that time, she later had to be euthanized. A necropsy showed that the dog suffered from multiple ailments including heartworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Veterinarians determined that the dog had been pregnant and that she died from a herniated fetus, infected uterus, and starvation.

Two additional dogs were reportedly found at the residence. Their condition is unreported at this time. Police arrested Riley and charged him with felony animal cruelty. Sign below and demand that Riley receive the maximum penalty by law, if convicted.

Dear District Attorney Campbell,

A dog was allegedly starved and denied life-saving veterinary care in a shocking case of animal cruelty. The dog reportedly suffered from pyometra, a rare infection caused by a neglected pregnancy. We demand justice for this innocent dog.

Tallahassee police charged Virgil Riley with felony animal cruelty after he allegedly starved and neglected his female bulldog, leading to her death. Per police, the dog suffered from multiple treatable ailments including hookworm, heartworm, whipworms, and tapeworms. Necropsy results showed that the dog had several dead fetuses in her uterus, which likely led to the rare and ultimately fatal infection. Proper veterinary care would have detected this condition, veterinarians stated, and likely prevented the dog’s death. Riley was arrested.

This awful cruelty must be punished. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty in this case.

Anyone who has ever bought a dog or cat is culpable in this disgusting cycle.
