Oklahoma: Invest in Education, Invest in the Future

Target: Mary Fallin, Governor of Oklahoma

Goal: Demand Oklahoma ensure proper funding for state public schools.

On Equal Pay Day, Oklahoma’s educators continue the fight for increased financial investment in themselves and in the children they help guide. April 2 marked the beginning of a statewide teacher walkout: an action that received support from school administrators and organizations across Oklahoma. This bold move follows an earlier strike by West Virginia teachers. At stake, advocates say, are the livelihoods of educators and the quality of education for students from kindergarten to high school.

Despite a modest raise prompted by the strike, Oklahoma teachers still rank at the bottom of nationwide educator salaries. Although they provide one of the world’s most invaluable services, many teachers can barely support their families. These educators are even more concerned about the impact of lacking financial support on their students. Textbooks are over a decade old in multiple districts, and numerous programs (particularly arts- and language-related programs) have been cut. In some regions, cash-strapped districts have eliminated an entire school day from their weekly schedules. Many more schools face a crushing surplus of students made worse by severe faculty and staff shortages.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently condemned the strike as “self-serving,” seemingly missing the point that these educators are advocating for their students and for America’s future. Sign this petition and urge Oklahoma state lawmakers to help combat the epidemic of public school underfunding through stronger tax dollar investment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Fallin,

You were recently sent bills that would provide an essential boost to Oklahoma’s drowning public education system. Educators responded that more investment is needed. If you do not take their words to heart, you ignore the very real concerns of the individuals on the front lines of educating our country’s future.

For every lacking textbook, lacking teacher, lacking paycheck, lacking classroom, and lacking school day, a little more is stripped away from children who rely on your state for an education that will better their lives. Data has consistently shown drastic reductions in education spending often correlate with tax cuts.

Do not continue this damaging trend. Please set a standard of investment that your state and the country can look upon with pride.

Sincerely,
