Justice for Thousands of Sheep Killed in Reported Barbaric Conditions

Target: David Littleproud, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Australia

Goal: Ban the live export of animals on ships where they are reportedly forced to endure inhumane, and often lethal, conditions.

The Australian government is investigating why thousands of sheep reportedly died on a live export ship bound for the Middle East. The most obvious cause appears to be heat stress, as the woolly animals were reportedly packed into tiny compartments with little water as they journeyed over thousands of miles of open sea. Whistleblowers have previously decried this practice, and it is time that such cruel live export be brought to an end.

Footage made available from Animals Australia appears to show hundreds of dead, decomposing sheep crammed into filthy pens. The Australian Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David Littleproud, has described the evidence as “very disturbing,” adding that he is “shocked and gutted.” However, this is not the first time that animals have died due to horrific conditions on live export ships, and it will likely not be the last without major changes.

No animal should be subjected to weeks standing in the heat in their own filth, as these sheep allegedly were. Sign this petition to urge the Australian government to ban all live exports overseas.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Littleproud,

Thousands of sheep destined to be slaughtered abroad were reportedly killed due to barbaric conditions on a live export ship bound for Kuwait. These innocent creatures were allegedly kept in filthy wet pens and exposed to extreme temperatures with little clean water to drink. It is not uncommon for sheep to succumb to this abysmal treatment on long voyages; this incident was considered noteworthy only because enough animals had died to require an official review.

There is something very wrong when sheep deaths are considered a normal part of transportation. No animal deserves to die in such a cruel and barbaric manner. Please put an end to this horrific practice and ban all live animal exports overseas.

Sincerely,

Live export is nothing but horrific cruelty to animals. Australia I thought better of you. Stop the live export of these innocent animals now.

    • The majority of Australians want this stopped. It’s the stupid politicians in the two main parties that keep sticking their head in the sand about it. There’s a big story on Australian TV tonight on 60 Minutes that’s reported to be very disturbing & confronting. Maybe this will finally make the pollies listen to the public & animal welfare groups & stop this disgusting live trade. Their lack of empathy is disgraceful. Please don’t think this is something that the average Australian endorses because we definitely don’t.

  4. Australia is quickly becoming one of the most vile barbaric places that truly treats animals in the most Inhumane ways imaginable. Why???? I thought this continent was so compassionate and beautiful. Horrific cruelty to so many innocent defenceless animals. An urgent and permanent ban on this horrible, cruel, unnecessary and unethical trade is WAY overdue!!
The ‘chances’ have long run out! It is an absolute embarrassment that, after all the damning evidence of animal cruelty that has been exposed, that this trade is allowed to continue.

Farmers would genuinely be appalled and utterly disgusted if only they knew what REALLY goes on.

I beg Mr Littleproud to stand up and be counted. Get rid of this farcical trade as a matter of extreme urgency.

    We ARE watching!!
