Thank Maryland For Saying ‘No’ to Gay Conversion Therapy

Target: William Frick, House Majority Leader of Maryland

Goal: Praise Maryland for voting to ban gay conversion therapy for minors.

Gay conversion therapy for minors is officially prohibited in Maryland, thanks to a 92-27 deciding vote. The results of the 2016 presidential election had seen the practice threaten to make a comeback, despite it having been long discredited and highly frowned upon. The vote successfully passed after legislator Meagan Simonaire spoke of her own painful experiences of her parents seeking such therapy for her when she came out as bisexual.

It is a great relief that this law has passed. Gay conversion therapy is dehumanizing, especially for children and teenagers who already struggle with feeling “different” from their peers. Parents seeking this sort of therapy see their children as “broken” or “sick,” wishing to “fix” or “cure” them, leading LGBT children into severe depression and self-loathing, possibly even suicide in the worst cases. Additionally, it is not a therapist’s job to judge a child’s sexuality. To do so makes a mockery of the practice.

No child deserves the pain and suffering of conversion therapy, and the more states that realize this, the better. So far, Maryland is one of eleven states to ban the practice, and it is hoped that more will follow. Sign this petition to thank the Maryland legislature for protecting the rights of LGBT children.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Majority Leader Frick,

Thank you for passing the vote to ban gay conversion therapy for minors in Maryland. Despite the practice being long discredited, it has threatened to make a comeback due to the results of the 2016 presidential election. This therapy dehumanizes LGBT children, forced into it by their parents and led down a dark path of depression and self-loathing; in some cases, it even leads to suicide.

LGBT citizens, especially children, deserve support and care, and state laws should always reflect that. Thank you for protecting LGBT children from lifetimes of abuse and self-hatred. It is hoped that this decision will encourage other states to do the same, thus leading to a permanent nationwide ban on gay conversion therapy.

Sincerely,

  1. What amazes me is the fact that 27 of the people voting actually think this practice should be allowed. I sincerely hope people will open their eyes and realize that LGBTQ+ people do not have anything wrong with them.

  2. Gen Agustsson says:

there is nothing wrong with being lgbtq+. conversion “therapy” is evil.
