Stop Allowing Chickens to Be Slaughtered While Conscious

Target: Anthony Rendon, California State Assembly Speaker

Goal: Bring California’s animal welfare standards for chickens in line with other farm animals by not allowing them to be killed while conscious.

The process of killing chickens in California’s massive poultry industry has included immense and unnecessary suffering, thanks to the state’s lax laws regarding slaughtering methods. In one typical process, the birds are shackled upside down while fully conscious just moments before they are killed. This action causes the birds unneeded pain and distress, and it must be brought to an end.

While California law requires that all other farm animals, such as pigs or cows, be rendered fully unconscious prior to slaughter, this same provision has not extended to chickens or other forms of poultry. This arbitrary omission appears to prohibit animal suffering in only some cases, while allowing it to continue unchecked for others. As chickens make up almost 98 percent of the animals raised for food, this means that the vast majority of animals killed in the state for food may be experiencing pain and suffering at the moment of slaughter.

The idea that chickens and other birds can be legally killed in this way is horrifying. Please add your signature to the petition below to demand that the poultry industry in California be held to a higher standard.

Dear Assembly Speaker Rendon,

California law currently prohibits farm animals such as cows and pigs from being conscious or able to feel pain at the moment of slaughter. Unfortunately, this same legal protection does not currently extend to chickens and other forms of poultry, which means that thousands of birds are killed each day using cruel and painful methods. That is why we are urging you to support the Humane Poultry Slaughter Act, which would address this glaring oversight.

We are appalled that it has taken this long to ensure basic animal welfare rights for chickens, but are grateful to see legislation such as this bill finally being discussed. We, the undersigned, urge you to support this necessary step toward making California a more humane place for all animals to live.

  1. Rebecca Surette says:

I am most certainly signing this. I would note, however, that there are methods of rendering an animal unconscious that are just as traumatic as the actual slaughter. This might need to be more specific.

  2. michelle mitchell says:

We need to exterminate each and every animal murdering bastard and use these POS as fertilizer. Give me animals to humans any day.

  3. Kristin Peterson says:

No animal at all deserves to suffer or die a horrible & painful death!
It makes no difference if it’s a companion animal or an animal raised for food. It’s still a living & breathing creature that feels hurt & pain, that experiences stress and emotions, and that suffers if killed cruelly and in a inhumane way!
The cruel & heartless people that are killing these animals in such a horrible violent way need to put themselves in these animals place’s and think how it would affect them to be shackled upside down by their ankles while someone goes down a line slitting their throats while they’re still alive and seeing & hearing the other’s killed right in front of them.

That’s cruel and inhumane beyond belief and it makes me sick!

  4. This legislation is required all over the world.

  5. Lisa Allred says:

    Signed & Shared❗️😠

  8. Heather HJ says:

Please help these chickens. Bad enough they are killed in an awful way, but more rules and laws need to be set, so it is more humane.

  9. Agree all comments kill them all like that fucken cruel world

  10. I hope that these people will experience the same suffering and fears when they are about to die!
