Don’t Ban Critical News Services by Labeling Them “Fake News”

Target: Najib Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia

Goal: Don’t silence important media outlets by labeling them as “fake news.”

Important news services in Malaysia may soon be silenced by the nation’s government. An anti-“fake news” bill is currently being debated. If passed, the bill threatens news outlets with fines, jail time, and even bans.

While “fake news,” as what was seen on Facebook during America’s 2016 election, is a real problem, Malaysia’s bill will make it easier for the government to punish and even silence news sources it deems critical of its performance.

This bill poses great danger to human rights in a nation where the press is already under attack. Sign the petition to demand that this law be abandoned.

Dear Prime Minister Razak,

The free press in your nation is under attack. A new bill is seeking to target so-called “fake news” outlets. While there is an issue of fake news being spread online through social media feeds, the term “fake news” has been thrown around so carelessly that it now poses a danger to journalists’ free speech everywhere.

The proposed “fake news” bill in your nation will not bring an end to “fake news.” It will only serve as a way for the government to control sources and narratives. I demand that this bill be abandoned immediately.
