Ban the Torture of Animals at Rodeo Events

Target: Meka Whaitiri, Associate Minister of Agriculture

Goal: Ban the cruel and inhumane exploitation of animals at rodeo events.

Rodeo animals are being exploited in New Zealand. Legal experts have released a report that shows the multiple ways in which the nation’s popular rodeo sports violate the country’s animal welfare laws. The report alleges that little has been done to restrict the use of electric cattle prods and spurs and other forms of harsh treatment. Its conclusion is that the island nation’s Rodeo Code of Welfare is outdated and does not do enough to protect the animals it is meant to serve.

For too long, rodeos have been allowed to exploit horses, cows and other animals in ways that cause them potential harm and distress. Just last year, a video emerged that reportedly showed adult cattle and calves being repeatedly shocked using prods and roughly thrown to the ground. These acts are contrary to the nation’s animal welfare laws, which prohibit causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, and must be stopped immediately.

The New Zealand government must stop turning a blind eye to the cruelty that is occurring at rodeo events nationwide. Sign this petition and demand that rodeos must be banned if they cannot ensure the well-being of the animals forced to participate in them.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Whaitiri,

According to a recent report prepared by animal law advocates, rodeos across New Zealand are in violation of the country’s animal welfare laws. This follows footage taken last year that allegedly showed rodeo cowboys wrestling and throwing animals to the ground. It also appeared to show handlers stunning cattle using powerful electric prods. Thanks to an obsolete Rodeo Code of Welfare, these acts of cruelty have largely gone unpunished.

Contrary to what pro-rodeo associations argue, these events subject horses and cows to significant distress and put them at substantial risk of injury or death. No animal should suffer for human entertainment. That is why we urge you to ban rodeos nationwide unless they can adhere to updated animal welfare laws.

Sincerely,

  3. I had no idea this sort of vile entertainment is going on! New Zealand- you are shameful, backward and disgraceful! I am all for sport, but this is not sport- it’s primitive savagery! Are you ever going to produce men and not mindless hooligans? Torture and murder just go to prove your pathetic mentality.

I have,in the past, signed multiple petitions regarding rodeos and the handling and exploitation of animals. What is the reason for not being able to put an end to such ignorant entertainment? I realize every country, province and state may have different laws but isn’t it about time we really take a good look at this form of activity and see what benefits come out of it? Instead of supporting this type of showcase, Look at what the animals go through so you and your families can “whoa and awe” over the senseless brutality the animals endure.

Sick, horrible individuals who obviously are incapable of leading decent lives. Surely they don’t have to cause such suffering to animals to enjoy life. Shame on you for allowing this vicious entertainment for total sickos.

  8. These spectacles of cruelty are every bit as savage as the horrific Roman orgies of cruelty in the Colosseum. New Zealand must show it is more civilised than that.
