Tell Airport to Stop Shipping Live Horses for Slaughter

Target: Tom Ruth, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport

Goal: Stop supporting the brutal killing of horses by allowing them to be shipped to Japan for slaughter.

The live export of horses is a cruel, multi-million dollar industry in which animals are horribly mistreated and then killed for their meat. Animal advocates are calling for the Edmonton International Airport in Canada to stop being complicit in this violence and brutality. The airport must stop allowing airlines to send shipments of live horses for the sake of selfish profit. Horses bought from the U.S. are exported alongside Canadian horses, from Canadian airports to Japan, where they are exploited and slaughtered for their meat.

The Canadian Horse Defense Coalition has been working to expose the practices of the horse slaughter and live shipment industries, including a lack of compliance with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) standards. Allegations of horrible mistreatment of these innocent animals are supported by photo and video footage. They are kept in overcrowded crates and spend hours in transit by truck, before being exposed to all kinds of weather while they wait to be loaded onto aircrafts for a flight across the globe. They can be denied food and water for up to 36 hours under Canada’s laws, but are often deprived of these needs for much longer, as Canadian laws no longer take effect as soon as the horses are out of the country. Sign below to demand that Edmonton International Airport stop allowing these horrors, and end the live export of horses to Japan.

Dear President Ruth,

The live export industry is unethical and cruel, and it is unacceptable for the Edmonton International Airport to continue allowing live shipments of horses to be sent to Japan for slaughter. Profit from these industries is not an excuse for the brutal killing of these innocent animals for their meat, and the suffering they are forced to endure before they are slaughtered abroad.

According to The Canadian Horse Defense Coalition, horses are kept crowded in crates that are too small, exposed to all types of weather conditions, and forced to spend hours in transit without food and water. The Canadian Horse Defense Coalition accrued photo and video evidence that supports these allegations and indicates non-compliance with the standards of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. This cannot be allowed to continue. I urge you to make the ethical choice to stop allowing airlines to export live horses through your airport.

Tom – The Animal Kingdom are citizens of this Earth too; they have just as much a right as we do to live their lives in peace on this planet, free from torture and murder at the hands of humans, simply for the crime of being ‘surplus’. Think of the suffering once in a while of which you spare yourself the site, to hell with the almighty dollar and show these innocent animals some compassion. It is high time we apply the “Golden Rule” to all living creatures on Earth…

  2. Alice Knight says:

To have any hand in this form of animal cruelty is wrong.
What is going on in our world today? The enormous amount of animal cruelty and injustice is inconceivable. Animals being fed and injected with drugs, poisoned, mutilated, thrown from vehicles and used to entertain, and yes, this list goes on; unfortunately. This is unacceptable for any country to participate and support in this sort of exporting and exploitation. It’s cruel and unethical. I travelled to Japan last year, and it didn’t seem to me they were starving due to the fact they lacked in horse meat.

Respect and Compassion for All God’s creatures Great and Small.
The only species needing culling from this planet is much of the human species and the sooner the better.
To the enablers and supporters may your worst nightmares come true and hurt you and yours where you will hurt and grieve the most.

  6. Shame on Tom Ruth and Edmonton International Airport.

You allow horses to be freighted like cargo over to Japan knowing they are going to be slaughtered after being mis-treated.
Show a little compassion and do the right thing and ban these shipments.
