Don’t Turn 911 Callers Over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Target: Bruce Linton, Tukwila Chief of Police, Washington

Goal: Do not allow officers to arrest individuals who place emergency calls for police assistance.

After an undocumented Honduran immigrant called 911 to report an attempted break-in at his home in Washington State, he expected the police to arrive and investigate. What he did not expect was that he would be the one arrested, after a background check revealed that he had an existing warrant from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This alleged collaboration between local police and ICE appears to overstep jurisdiction, and may put lives in danger if immigrants are too fearful to call for help when it is needed.

Arrests of undocumented immigrants have increased greatly since Trump became president. Some of these arrests have been called into question when they’ve appeared to violate an individual’s or family’s civil rights, as immigrants rights activists claim has occurred in this and similar cases nationwide. If immigrants are targeted in potentially life-threatening situations, people may be harmed and serious crimes may go unreported, putting the entire community at risk.

Police must follow proper procedures that are already in place when responding to emergency calls made by immigrants and citizens alike. Sign this petition to tell the Tukwila chief of police that his officers must not continue to overstep their bounds when dealing with potential undocumented immigrants.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Linton,

While responding to an alleged attempted break-in at a residence in Tukwila, your officers ran a background check on both the suspect and the caller, a Honduran man and father of three. The background check revealed that ICE had an existing warrant out for the emergency caller, at which point the officers handcuffed and handed him over to immigration officials. This alleged collaboration between police and ICE in response to a potentially life-threatening situation is disturbing and does not make your community safer.

Police officers must not treat undocumented immigrants differently than other emergency callers when they arrive at the scene of a suspected crime. That is why I urge you to penalize those who were responsible and ensure that the rest of your force does not overstep the bounds of jurisdiction or civil rights when it comes to dealing with potential undocumented immigrants.

Sincerely,

  1. Stupid petition. DON’T SIGN. ….an existing warrant from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

yeah and it is suppose the police turn is bacl on this. If it was a rapist or a pedophile or the murder of your family what would u think?? So let’s imagine. He had a warrant for raping your wife, but the police would say: Oh he is an illegal immigrant which is trying to have a better life while making others living here for much long bad, because it is what immigrants do. They increase crime, they take jobs and decrease hour payment, increase the second economy and on top of that most want to get benefits and not work and this one already had a warrant for raping but of course bec he also was an illegal immigrant and call police bec someoneone else break in, of course the police and the whole system should close the eyes and let him keep up with his crimes is like black people wan to commit crimes and to go away with them saying is racism, is blackmail and totally false their allegation. Go tell histories to other planet, under the ground for instance could be a good place for the one who start this stupid petition and those who commit crimes and immigrants commit much more crimes than the nationals.

    Dear Chief Linton,
That was totally unfair — what does safety have to do with the ‘legal status’ of someone making the call? Why then police assure people and kids that they shouldn’t be afraid of them because they are there ‘to help and protect’? … totally illogical, isn’t it?
What will happen the day those ‘illegal immigrants’ are no longer in this country? Who will work in the fields? Who will do the jobs that Americans refuse and are unwilling to do?
