Stop the Unnecessary Slaughter of Chickens Using Ineffective Stun Guns

Target: Michael Gove, United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Goal: Investigate the overuse of electric stun guns that fail to ensure loss of consciousness for chickens being slaughtered for their meat.

Agricultural experts in the United Kingdom have warned that one particular method of slaughtering chickens destined for the dinner table may be subjecting these animals to slow and painful deaths. Although electric stun guns are meant to ensure that the birds are unconscious or dead at the time their throats are cut, reports have revealed that this is often not the case. While electric stunning is banned in other European nations, it is time that Britain stop turning a blind eye to this ineffective form of execution, which has been widely permitted under ‘religious rights’ exemptions.

Statistics show that in the last year 20 percent of chickens in the United Kingdom, over 180 million in total, were killed using electric stunning, even though less than five percent of the population follows strict Jewish or Islamic law that requires meat to be prepared in this way. The overuse of electric stunning must be investigated, and more humane alternatives sought that do not involve subjecting animals to torture and pain in the final moments of their lives.

It is especially vital that animal welfare issues such as this be addressed at this time as the United Kingdom prepares to leave the European Union. Sign this petition to urge British officials to crack down on the overuse of this cruel method of killing and to stop allowing religious exemptions where they are not needed.

Dear Secretary Gove,

I am writing you to express my concerns regarding the use of electric stun guns used on poultry before they are killed, commonly sanctioned under so-called ‘religious rights’ exemptions. This method of slaughter is ineffective, and often causes birds to remain conscious at the moment their throats are cut, causing them unnecessary pain and distress.

Given the political situation in Britain at this time, you have a unique opportunity to call for higher standards for animal welfare in your country. That is why I am asking you to investigate the instances in which this inhumane method of killing is being used, and to have it be severely limited or banned completely nationwide.
