End Shock Therapy Sessions on Autistic Adults

Target: Scott Gottlieb, FDA Commissioner

Goal: Ban use of electrotherapy devices on people with autism.

There are still parts of the United States where people with autism are given electrotherapy in hopes of “curing” their autism. The outdated practice is still being used in places like the Judge Rotenberg Center in Massachusetts.

The FDA is considering a rule that ends the electrotherapy practices, but they are treating the effort as a passive one.

Meanwhile, autistic residents continue to be dehumanized and electrocuted simply for existing. As long as the FDA gives clearance to use these methods, autistic adults will continue being electrocuted as a form of “therapy.” Demand an end to this barbaric trend of treating people with autism like they’re ill.

Dear Commissioner Gottlieb,

People who have autism are no different from you or me; they are humans with emotions and families, just like the rest of us. So, why are certain methods of shock therapy still being advised as treatment options for anyone who has autism? Electrocution has long since been ruled out as an effective form of psychiatric care, so why is it still approved as treatment?

As long as you treat autistic adults as if they are second-class citizens, there will be no true equality in mental health. It’s time that archaic methods of therapy are outlawed, so we may begin advancing our collective mental health along with modern technology. Put an end to this barbaric treatment, at once!
