Urge Candidate to Drop Out After Homophobic Remarks

Target: Leslie Gibson, Republican Candidate for the Maine House of Representatives

Goal: Drop out of the running for the Maine House of Representatives.

Leslie Gibson, a Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives, tweeted about some of the Parkland shooting survivors who are now calling for political action to end gun violence, calling one a “skinhead lesbian” and another a “bald-face liar.” Gibson is currently the only declared candidate for the 57th district in Maine. His comments on Twitter were pointed at two of the most prominent survivors who are calling for gun reform: Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg, respectively.

Gibson’s tweet about Gonzalez was in response to an article from The Hill. He wrote, “There’s nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing to say unless you’re frothing at the mouth moonbat.” He also suggested in another tweet that referring to Gonzalez as a “survivor” of the shooting was misrepresentative of the situation because “she was in a completely different part of the school” than the students who were shot and killed. Gibson’s comments about Hogg came after the teen did an interview with CNN in which he said NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch “owns congressmen.”

Gibson received public backlash for the comments and used Twitter to “sincerely apologize.” However, these homophobic and inflammatory remarks lack any civility and reveal Gibson as unfit to serve in the government. Sign this petition to urge him to drop out of the running for the Maine House of Representatives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Gibson,

Regardless of your party affiliation, being a politician means conducting yourself in a responsible and respectful manner. Recently, you failed to do that by making very pointed, homophobic, and inflammatory comments about two prominent survivors of the Parkland school shooting who have been vocal in calling for gun reform laws. Regarding Emma Gonzalez, a teenage girl who openly identifies as bisexual, you said, “There’s nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing to say unless you’re frothing at the mouth moonbat.” Not only does Gonzalez’s sexuality and choice of hairstyle have nothing to do with her stance on gun control, but to single out an individual as representative of an entire movement lacks sensitivity. Furthermore, you called David Hogg a “bald-faced liar” for his statements about NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch’s relationship to politics.

Although you have since apologized for these remarks, greater action must be taken. After so publicly revealing your biases and your inability to filter your personal opinions, the best course of action would be for you to respectfully remove yourself from the running for the Maine House of Representatives. I urge you to step out of the running.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
