Katy Perry: Apologize for Sexual Misbehavior on American Idol

Target: Katy Perry

Goal: Apologize for inappropriate sexual behavior on American Idol.

During the televised auditions for this season of the American singing competition American Idol, celebrity judge Katy Perry pressured a 19-year-old contestant to kiss her on the cheek and then proceeded to kiss him on the lips, without his consent. The 19-year-old had never kissed anyone before, clearly stating that he was brought up conservatively.

The contestant, Benjamin Glaze, started his audition by describing his current work situation. He mentioned that he likes his current job because sometimes he gets to chat with cute female customers. When judge Luke Bryan asked Glaze if he had ever kissed a girl, Glaze responded, “No, I’ve never been in a relationship. I can’t kiss a girl without being in a relationship.” At this point, Perry stood up from her judge’s table and demanded that he come kiss her.

Glaze proceeded to hesitate and say no a few times. Finally, he approached Perry and kissed her on the cheek. Perry seemed upset that the kiss was not as dramatic, saying that he didn’t even make a kissing sound. She asked him for another kiss and as Glaze went to repeat the kiss on the cheek, Perry turned her head to kiss him on the lips. Perry exclaimed, “I got him!” Glaze responded by falling to the ground, his mouth wide open in shock.

Glaze discussed the incident with The New York Times, saying that he wished he could have waited to share his first kiss with a special someone. “Would I have done it if she said, ‘Would you kiss me?’ No, I would have said no,” Glaze said. “I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.”

This behavior is inappropriate and unprofessional. Additionally, the pressure that Perry put on the younger, less experienced contestant—whose job it was to please the judges, Perry included—is insensitive given the recent push to prevent sexual harassment in Hollywood and high-profile job settings. Sign this petition to demand Perry accept blame and apologize for her actions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Miss Perry,

While in Hollywood, a kiss is often a theatrical aspect of the job, for non-celebrities it can often be a very emotionally wrought and intimate action. For Benjamin Glaze, his first kiss was supposed to be shared with someone special in his life. Because of your actions during his audition on American Idol, the opportunity to share a planned, special first kiss has been taken from him without his consent.

Your actions were not only inappropriate and unprofessional, but they also are insensitive to the push for accountability in Hollywood for sexual misconduct. I urge you to accept your culpability in this situation and to publicly apologize for your misbehavior.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
