Shut Down Allegedly Neglectful Roadside Zoo

Target: Ty E. Gray, Director of the Arizona Game and Fish Department

Goal: Do not renew the license of roadside zoo The Camel Farm, which has been cited for neglecting and mistreating its animals.

Photographs of neglected animals illustrate the alleged unacceptable mistreatment of animals at urban farm and petting zoo The Camel Farm. Visitors at the roadside zoo, concerned for the welfare of the animals, took photos apparently showing sub-par shelters with large amounts of mud and feces, multiple animals with overgrown hooves, and a camel with a large mass on his chest.

This is not the first time these issues have been reported. The Camel Farm violated a November 2017 inspection by having 17 animals in need of hoof trims, a limping goat, and an ibex so underweight that the veterinary recommendation was to euthanize the animal. Sadly, The Camel Farm seems to have ignored this advice, and the ibex suffered for weeks before being found dead. A more recent USDA inspection which just became public also suggests that these problems have not been addressed. PETA reports that “inspectors found numerous animals with hair loss and or in need of hoof trims, an excessively thin sheep, and a goat who was observed limping, a condition that he’s exhibited for a year. Many enclosures were in disrepair, lacked adequate shade, or had standing water and mud, and one camel and her nursing baby had no access to drinking water.”

This roadside zoo currently has its license renewal pending. By Arizona law, this renewal should be denied because it is in the best interest of the wildlife. PETA has filed a complaint and is calling for the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) not to renew the license, and to shut down The Camel Farm. Sign below to demand that the AZGFD follow PETA’s advice and shut down this roadside zoo.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Gray,

The license of roadside zoo The Camel Farm must not be renewed, and the farm must be shut down. Arizona law states that when it is the best interest of wildlife, the AZGFD is required to deny a license to these types of farms and zoos. Considering the incriminating photographs and the documented violations of USDA inspections at The Camel Farm, it is your responsibility to do just that.

Inspection records and photos taken by concerned visitors apparently show underweight animals, some limping and with hair loss or masses on their body, in need of hoof trims and living in utterly inadequate conditions. PETA has filed a complaint against The Camel Farm, another clear indication of worrisome neglect. These animals do not deserve to live this way. I urge you to deny a license renewal to The Camel Farm and to ensure that it is shut down.

Sincerely,

Thank you to the visitors of the roadside zoo “The Camel Farm”, who took pictures exposing the neglect and cruelty to the animals there.
