Pass Laws for Gun Control and School Safety

Target: Rick Scott, Governor of Florida

Goal: Sign the gun control and school safety bill into law.

Gun control measures are being approved in Florida. On March 5, the Florida Senate passed a $400 million gun control and school safety bill. The bill, which is in response to a February mass school shooting that left 17 students and staff members dead, is now headed to the desk of Governor Rick Scott to see whether or not it will be signed into state law.

The proposed gun control and school safety bill was hotly debated by politicians as well as members of the community in Parkland, where the February mass school shooting took place. The bill would raise the minimum age to purchase any firearm from 18 to 21. It would also impose a three-day waiting period for all gun purchases, regardless of age. Within schools, it would provide funding for school-specific police officers as well as mental health counselors. The bill would allow local school districts and sheriffs to arm certain school personnel. Finally, the bill would ban bump stocks, which make guns fire faster, and would give law enforcement more power to commit people who are deemed a threat.

Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat who graduated from Stoneman Douglas High where the shooting took place, argued strongly for the bill to be passed into law. He said, “This isn’t hard. Putting your kid in the ground is hard. This is easy.” Many Republicans seemed to agree as well. Representative Shawn Harrison, Republican of Tampa, said, “This may be the most consequential vote we ever take on this floor. Grown-ups protect our kids. It’s what we do. It’s our turn. Don’t let them down.”

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Scott,

In the wake of the Parkland mass school shooting that left 17 students and staff members of Stonemann Douglas High dead, the public has been begging for laws that will help prevent gun violence. Lawmakers in your state recently approved a gun control and school safety bill that would raise the minimum wage to buy a gun, impose a three-day waiting period on firearm purchases, ban bump stocks, fund school-specific police officers and mental health professionals, allow school districts and sheriffs to arm certain school staff members, and give law enforcement more power to commit individuals who have been deemed a threat.

This bill is necessary to help prevent gun violence in Florida and give students the right to access a safe education. I urge you to sign the gun control and school safety bill into law.
