Stop Violent Discrimination in Sri Lanka

Target: Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

Goal: Punish Buddhist groups that are inciting or carrying out violence.

Violence between Sinhalese Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka has resulted in a nationwide state of emergency. The state of emergency will allow troops to be deployed in civilian areas for just over a week in order to help control and prevent violence from spreading. Mano Ganesan, the Sri Lankan minister for coexistence, said, “There were concerns that communal violence would spread. We don’t want to spread communal disharmony and hate speech.”

The violence occurring is largely being carried out by the Sinhalese Buddhists, who make up a 75% majority in Sri Lanka, against the Muslim minority group. In recent days, there have been arson attacks and riots often occurring around Muslim-owned businesses and mosques. The violence seems to be quickly spreading out of control. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the prime minister of Sri Lanka, noted that the violence “appeared to be systemic and organized” at this point.

However, the unrest between Sinhalese Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka is nothing new. Alan Keenan, a Sri Lankan specialist with the International Crisis Group, stated that radical Buddhists have been attacking Muslims “with a significant degree of regularity” since 2012 and more intensely since last year.

The government needs to take action not only to de-escalate the violence but also to prevent it from continuing on by punishing those responsible for the unrest. Sign this petition to urge Ranil Wickremesinghe to punish the radical Buddhist groups that are inciting or carrying out violence in Sri Lanka.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Wickremesinghe,

Violence between radical Sinhalese Buddhist groups and Muslims in Sri Lanka has been carried out with unfortunate regularity and has been ramping up in the past year. The extreme violence that is currently being carried out is so bad that you have declared a state of emergency that will allow the presence of troops in civilian areas to de-escalate and prevent violence.

However, further measures are needed to protect the people of Sri Lanka. There are attacks being carried out on mosques and Muslim-operated business areas that you yourself have recognized as “systemic and organized.” I urge you to end the impunity and punish any radical Buddhist groups that are proved to be inciting or carrying out violence in Sri Lanka.
