Stop Arresting People for Being House-less

Target: Commander Dominic H. Choi, Los Angeles Police Department Homeless Coordinator

Goal: Immediately cease arresting private citizens who do not have “official” residential housing.

The Los Angeles Police Department has been arresting the city’s house-less citizens 31% more in recent years, mostly for minor offenses such as missing court or sleeping outside. In 2017 alone the LAPD’s arrested 14,500 house-less people, a 10% spike from the year before. When you arrest someone for attempting to get by while living on the streets, the only thing accomplished is that person’s life being made more difficult at the expense of taxpayers, only to have them return to the streets once they’re out of jail.

The City of Los Angeles began to adopt anti-criminalization policies several years ago, but officials are still justifying arrests; Dominic H. Choi, head of LAPD’s Homeless Commission, says the arrests are necessary as a “last-resort measure.” It’s only acceptable to criminalize another human being when they have committed an actual crime, not when they’re sleeping in a park because they ran out of options. Sign the petition below to demand Commander Choi cease criminalizing citizens of Los Angeles.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear  Commander Choi,

The people of Los Angeles are not criminals for simply wanting a place to lay their heads at night. So why are you treating them like they are? When you arrest private citizens for minor offenses related to their lack of housing, you only create more problems in an environment your commission is trying to fix.

Arrests don’t make the lives of house-less citizens any easier to deal with, and they have nowhere else to go when they get out of jail, so you’re sending them right back to the streets with more stress and debt than before. It’s time you stop criminalizing people for just trying to live.

Sincerely,
