Cat Gruesomely Cut in Half Deserves Justice

Target: Chief Toby Aguillard, Lafayette Police Department

Goal: Apprehend, charge, and fully punish the person or party responsible for  severing a household cat in half.

A nine-year-old cat named Bella was found severely mutilated in Lafayette, Louisiana. The owner of the cat said he was leaving for work in the morning when he noticed a dismembered animal on the lawn of a neighboring yard. He stated he walked over to see what had happened when he realized that the poor animal was his family pet. The cat was precisely cut in half with what appeared to be a large, sharp knife such as a machete. It is frightening that no one has been apprehended for this brutality.

The owner described the cat’s skin as cut clean with no ragged edges, and apparently only the top half of her torso was found. There was no blood, organs, or fur reported at the crime scene, and animal control officers ruled out an attack by another animal as the cause of death. Allegedly, the Lafayette Police Department declined to investigate and Lafayette Animal Control continues their reconnaissance with little to go on.

Alarmingly, there have been two other cat slayings in Louisiana that were committed in the same grisly fashion. Two years ago, the bottom half of another Lafayette feline was found cleanly severed with no blood at the scene. Prior to that, the Louisiana town of Covington had reported a cat murder, with the animal precisely cut in half and left on a golf course for display. These three cases are disturbingly similar, and it is terrifying that there have been no arrests made in regard to any of them.

Bella’s owners and neighbors said she was a friendly and peaceable animal who spent lazy hours on the family’s front porch. It is unknown who did this horrific act, and truly disconcerting that the culprit is still on the loose, free to cause harm to other innocent beings. Please sign the petition below to insist the Lafayette Police Department investigate this case until solved, and demand they place greater emphasis on animal cruelty to better serve and protect their community.

Dear Chief Aguillard,

A terrible crime of animal cruelty was committed that resulted in death, deserving the attention of the Lafayette Police Department due to the disturbing nature of the crime and the related threat to the citizens of your city. A neighborhood cat was sadistically mutilated, executed by being cleanly cut in half. The cat’s owner, Jeff Ducharme, was shaken beyond belief to find only the top half of his beloved nine-year old cat, Bella, tossed in a neighboring front yard.

The sickening way in which this crime was implemented is extremely disconcerting and warrants intense and collaborative investigation. Police accounts in both Lafayette and Covington, Louisiana, report the severing of two cats in the same revolting manner. The fact that no one has been apprehended in these cases is beyond worrisome as there appears to be a pattern to these unspeakable crimes.

There is an undeniable correlation between animal and human cruelty. People who torture and murder defenseless animals will, most likely, continue their quest for blood by elevating their acts to greater and more horrendous levels. I insist the Lafayette Police Department fully investigate this case and make every effort to apprehend and harshly punish those responsible to ensure the safety and welfare of the people and all living things you strive to serve and protect.

I am appalled that the police department are at liberty to pick and choose what they feel is important to them. I think it is time pressure from the state should be applied.
Unless the state feels finding this individual(s) is not a priority as well. Very sad.

  7. When will people realize that they need to KEEP THEIR PETS INSIDE OR IN A SAFE PLACE when they are not around? We all know that there are sick-assed people everywhere, who love to torture and kill animals.

  8. G. Petersen says:

Law enforcement needs to spend more resources finding animal abusers. It’s a fact that people who torture animals will take the next step and move onto people. If animal abusers were locked up there would be far less crime across the board.
