Applaud Protection of Wild Horses’ Lives

Target: Russell Begaye, Navajo Nation President

Goal: Support the decision to spare the lives of 60 wild horses in Arizona by canceling a cruel wild horse hunt.

The lives of 60 wild horses were spared on National Horse Protection Day, when a brutal hunt was cancelled. The decision comes in response to the outrage expressed by animal advocates over the cruelty of the plans. In a local trophy hunting area in Arizona,  the killing was planned to exterminate the “excess” feral animals whose population has become a problem.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye said in a statement, “We understand the concerns of the people. We know the issue of horses is an emotional one with strong feelings on all sides. My administration will not condone a horse hunt for controlling the overpopulation of feral horses. But we do need to implement a management plan to preserve and protect Navajo land for future generations.” Sign below to support this step toward humanity and compassion, and to urge the Navajo Nation to continue striving toward humane solutions—such as adoption or relocation—to manage the horse population.

Dear President Begaye,

Thank you for heeding the call of animal advocates and concerned citizens and for sparing the lives of innocent wild horses on National Horse Protection Day. The scheduled hunt to kill the “excess” feral horses was a needlessly cruel solution to the problem of the growing horse population. Thank you for taking your responsibilities seriously as leader of the Navajo Nation and respecting that fact.

Canceling this hunt is a positive step toward compassion and conservation. While the horse population is, as you say, a problem that must be dealt with, alternative solutions such as adoption and relocation must be considered. I support this decision to cancel the horse hunt and I urge you to continue on this route and work toward finding humane solutions to this problem.

Thank you for seeing ethical sense and compassion this time around but more needs to be done on the longer term.
The BLM needs to be disbanded and fined for years of heinous cruelty and mismanagement, and prosecuted in a court of Law!. I know this is costly but it really needs to be done. A new team employed for the management needs of the horses and burros taken over by persons or groups that are very knowledgeable on wild horses who are NOT in bed with the graziers.
    Thank you.
