Demand America Follow Australia’s Lead on Gun Laws

Target: Paul Ryan, 54th Speaker of the House of Representatives

Goal: Take legislative action to mirror common sense gun control measures taken in Australia.

In 2017 Australia collected 57,000 illegal firearms off of their streets. Australia held a three-month amnesty dedicated to getting as many illegal firearms out of circulation as possible, the first amnesty of its kind since Australia enacted strict gun control laws. Ever since a mass shooting in 1996 that killed 35 people, Australia has adapted hard-line gun control policies that prohibit private ownership of automatic weapons, like the ones used in the ’96 massacre and the recent Parkland shooting.

With all the recent tragedy in the United States relating to gun violence, Congress could really use some concrete legislation to support that reflects the concerns of the American people. More and more, people are pointing to countries like Australia, who has yet to experience another mass shooting since 1996, as ways we can lead our country in the right direction of sensible gun control. Countries like Australia prove that you can still have citizens who own private firearms, but have enough legislation in place that the chances of those firearms being misused drop dramatically.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Ryan,

The American people have made their voices heard: the survivors of Parkland; the parents of Sandy Hook; the schoolchildren just trying to go about their days; the average constituent. Across all lines and parties there seems to be a consensus that enough is enough and tragedies like Parkland must never happen again. The American people don’t just want answers, they want action.

Australia began taking action 21 years ago after their last mass shooting. Since then, they have had virtually no gun violence and zero mass shootings. Common sense legislation is not some alternate reality. Follow Australia’s lead already.

Sincerely,

  2. “Amnesty International issued a statement accusing the Egyptian air force of using US supplied Mk 118 cluster munitions in North Sinai.” however, typical of amnesty international’s lack of moral compass, they never condemned the rawda mosque attack in sinai. they are more concerned with the type and provenance of the munitions used to fight terrorism, than with the human rights of more than 300 victims of those same terrorists.
