Tell New SeaWorld CEO to Stop Imprisoning Wildlife

Target: John T. Reilly, Interim CEO of SeaWorld Entertainment

Goal: End the inhumane treatment and captivity of animals at all SeaWorld parks worldwide.

SeaWorld has long been condemned for its abusive treatment of rare and endangered sea creatures. Long-time SeaWorld Entertainment CEO Joel Manby has left the company in response to record-low ticket sales as people become increasingly aware of the inhumane treatment of animals at its marine parks. With a new interim CEO put in place, we must take this opportunity to demand immediate and lasting change at all SeaWorld locations.

Since the first SeaWorld marine park opened its doors over 50 years ago, a wide variety of animals, including sea lions, bottlenose dolphins, and orcas, have been exploited for entertainment purposes. In captivity, these animals live unnatural lives confined within tiny tanks and often end up with a host of physical ailments, including broken teeth from gnawing on iron bars and injuries sustained from fights between tankmates. For these reasons and more, it is long past time for SeaWorld to correct these injustices and stop imprisoning these majestic creatures.

Let us demand a more compassionate and cruelty-free future for marine parks like SeaWorld. Sign this petition and tell the new interim CEO that wild animals belong in the wild and not in degrading shows for human audiences.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Reilly,

The fact that park attendance has plummeted at SeaWorld’s many marine parks worldwide is a strong indication that times have changed and that people are becoming more aware of the suffering whales and dolphins face when they are forced to live in captivity. Now that you have stepped into SeaWorld Entertainment’s top executive role, you have an opportunity to enact great change and bring this inhumane treatment to an end.

Much research has been done on captive orcas, dolphins, and other marine life to show that they cannot live natural or healthy lives in confinement. For example, all adult orcas in captivity have been shown to have damaged teeth as a result of trying to bite through iron bars. Other animals are known to become more aggressive in captivity and may attack each other as a stress response.

For these reasons and more, we demand that you call for the end of all captive breeding programs and animal imports, and transfer all living animals to compassionate wildlife sanctuaries where they may live out the rest of their lives without further exploitation.

Sincerely,
