Target: Executives at Fox News
Goal: Ask Fox News to stop barring producers from discussing topics that do not align with conservative ideology, such as gun control.
Recently, after the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, media stations began to discuss the impact of gun control and invited conversation about this controversial topic. Many network producers had varying opinions and interviewed numerous sources, giving viewers a wide array of information to make informed decisions. One station, however, explicitly barred its producers from even raising the subject of gun control, likely for fear that it would conflict with their blatantly conservative bias in favor of guns. In the past, the Fox News network has opposed propositions for gun regulation.
If Fox News wishes to report only biased information and selectively choose what news stories to discuss, then it should disclose its bias to the public and stop claiming that it reports the “news.” Currently, gun control is becoming a hot issue, and therefore it is news. Failure to report on this shields Fox viewers from conversation revolving around this very important topic. Just because the majority of Fox viewers are conservative, and therefore potentially opposed to most forms of gun control, does not mean that Fox News can ban conversation of the subject altogether. Despite Fox’s politically conservative leanings, they do not aid the public by sticking their fingers in their ears and pretending that controversy does not exist in today’s society. More so, it must be discussed and debated, not fled from.
Restricting and controlling the course of public conversation is selective exposure and has no place in public news. Tell Fox News that it cannot ban its producers from bringing up news-related subjects, regardless of how they align politically with the bias of Fox executives. It is never okay for a news source to claim it reports the news when it explicitly bans such topics from discussion and thereby blinds its viewers to current events. Whether or not Fox News likes it, gun control is news today.
Dear Executives at Fox News,
In lieu of the tragic mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, you explicitly banned your producers from discussing gun control. At present, gun control is a topic of national conversation, and barring your staff from presenting this issue to the public is unacceptable. If you consider your media a “news station,” then you must present the news. Gun control, the good and bad of it, is news today and therefore you cannot and should not prevent discussion around this topic. It is also necessary to have this conversation in order to prevent further tragedies from occurring.
In the future, please allow your producers to report on all current events, regardless of how they negatively reflect on your conservative political views. Just because your network is against gun regulation does not mean that you can blind your viewers to the nationwide discussion of gun policy. News is news, period, and if you do not allow your staff to report the news, then you are not truly a news station.
