Demand Adequate Medical Care for Protestor Arrested in Jordan

protestors

Target: Awad Khleifat, Minister of the Interior.

Goal: To attain proper medical care for and the release of Adnan al-Howeish.

Jordanian citizen Adnan al-Howeish was arrested after peacefully participating in a protest against proposed fuel subsidy cuts in the country. Family members have reported that his left eye was seriously injured during the protest and he has since lost vision in that eye. During the peaceful protest on November 16, he was struck in the eye by a rock and the eye came out of its socket. Protestors claim that masked supporters of the government threw stones and injured many protestors. Adnan al-Howeish was arrested while in the hospital the next day. He was handcuffed to the bed and not allowed the medical attention he desperately needed. The National Center for Human Rights appealed the decision and the government eventually allowed for a surgery to have the eyeball restored to its normal position. While doctors recommended further treatment in a specialized medical center, al-Howeish was transferred on the 21st of November to a cell in the al-Balqa’ prison in Salt. His family has repeatedly been denied requests to have him see eye specialists for treatment that he urgently needs.

Cases of detainees being denied adequate medical treatment are not rare. Another man, Mahdi al-Saafin, went on a hunger strike on November 28 in protest to his detention and was consequently placed in solitary confinement.  An independent doctor who visited him confirmed Mahdi al-Saafin’s complaint that prison officials withheld water from him for two days, among other mistreatment.

Adnan al-Howeish must be allowed immediate medical attention for his injured left eye. He must also be charged with an internationally recognized crime or be released immediately and unconditionally. During 2012 alone hundreds have been arrested and faced criminal charges and unfair trial for participating in peaceful protests calling for the effective implementation of political and economic reforms. Sign this petition and call on the Jordanian government to ensure the human rights of Adnan al-Howeish and therefore, its entire population.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister of the Interior Awad Khleifat,

During 2012 alone hundreds of your citizens have been arrested and faced unfair trial for participating in peaceful protests calling for the effective implementation of political and economic reforms. One of these protestors, Adnan al-Howeish, has been held by Jordanian security since the 17th of November after he was arrested for protesting fuel subsidy cuts. There are reports that he has also been denied medical attention that he desperately needs so that the vision his left eye may be saved. By denying his access to adequate medical care, the Jordanian government is violating the basic human right to a healthy life.

Adnan al-Howeish must be allowed immediate access to the healthcare that he needs. The Jordanian government must be responsible for ensuring the welfare of its people. I also ask that Adnan al-Howeish be released immediately and unconditionally if he is not to be charged with an internationally recognized offense.

Sincerely,

  1. Adnan al-Howeish needs medical care, must have his human rights and should be freed immediately especially if there is no legitimate reason for him to be imprisoned.
