Target: Speaker of the House John Boehner, former House Administration Chairman Dan Lungren, and Republicans in the House of Representatives
Goal: To stop Republican members of the House from spending taxpayers’ money on defending the anti-gay discrimination clause of the Defense of Marriage Act.
It was recently revealed that former House Administration Chairman Dan Lungren, a Republican from California, secretly approved raising the cost cap for defending the Defense of Marriage Act in federal court to $2 million in September of this year. Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a 1996 federal law, defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In February 2011, the Obama Administration declared it would not defend this section of DOMA against litigation. Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, however, have taken it upon themselves to use $2 million of taxpayers’ money to defend DOMA, essentially defending discrimination against gay couples that wish to marry and share the same benefits straight couples do.
The House GOP raised the cost cap of defending DOMA back in September, yet they waited until after the election to reveal this decision to American voters and Democratic members of Congress. One can assume that Republican members of the House waited to reveal their decision due to cowardly concern over their chances of reelection. Their decision may have especially important consequences for the upcoming Supreme Court’s review of the constitutionality of DOMA.
The secrecy of the House GOP is a betrayal of the trust of American citizens; their decision is a betrayal of American values of equality and justice for all. Sign the petition below to tell the Republicans in Congress you will not stand for anti-gay discrimination, especially on your dime.
Dear Speaker John Boehner, former Chairman Dan Lungren, and Republican members of the House of Representatives,
We condemn your recent decision to secretly raise the spending cap for defending the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act to $2 million. You have collectively violated the trust of American citizens by making this decision in secret and hiding it during the 2012 election season. This decision betrays our country’s foundation of equality, freedom, and justice for all. You’re reckless spending of tax money is especially detestable in the face of current unemployment rates in the U.S. and the current state of our economy.
We stand for equal rights for all, regardless of sexual or gender identity. Your recent irresponsible decisions do not represent the values of your electorate; statistics show that the majority of Americans now support gay marriage. The support for marriage equality continues to grow. Your resistance against this positive cultural shift is reprehensible and embarrassing. We demand that you stop using our money to defend discrimination and publicly apologize for your unnecessary secrecy of your decision.
